  2. Pick colors from the Color Picker under the tool or directly from your uploaded image by clicking or tapping the "Pick Color from Image" button. You can also paste your own HEX color code into the field below the tool.
  3. Fill areas of an image with any color with a single click or tap
  4. Adjust tolerance to control how far the color spreads
  5. Reduce opacity if you want to apply semi-transparent color overlays
  6. Undo previous actions if you are not satisfied

  8. Keep your images private - files are not uploaded or stored

Unique Feature - Opacity Slider

The Opacity slider allows you to apply color semi-transparently. This means the original texture of the image remains visible while the new color is blended on top.

This feature is also useful for neutralizing strong colors. For example, if a shirt appears too red, you can apply a green or gray color with reduced opacity. The original red tone will still show through, but it becomes less intense and more balanced.

What this tool is useful for:

  • Recoloring logos and icons
  • Editing illustrations
  • Changing clothing colors in photos
  • Color fill for line art in coloring books
  • Coloring backgrounds
  • Desaturating colors with semi-transparent color overlays
  • Applying color overlay
  • and many more...

This tool is a digital version of "Glazing" - a technique oil painters have used for centuries to shift tones. With our tool you can apply this effect to specific parts of the image. It can also be used as a color correction tool. You can also reduce the strength of a texture by picking the base color, reducing its opacity, and applying it over the same area using the paint bucket tool.

Paint Bucket Tool Examples, Demos, and Ideas

webp animation showing how to fill the backround with many colors behind smiling man using Paint bucket tool

Change Background Color with One Click

In this screen recording, the white background behind a person is replaced with a new color using a single click of the Paint Bucket tool . No selection, no masking, no layers - just click the area and it fills instantly.

Use the Tolerance slider to control how much of the similar color area gets filled - lower tolerance fills only very similar shades, higher tolerance spreads the fill across a wider range of colors. If the fill spills onto the t-shirt or other parts of the image, no worries - click Undo, reduce the Tolerance (around 20% is usually safe for cases like this), and click the background again.

Experiment and see what you can create. Download your edited image in the original size and quality. Since nothing is uploaded to our servers, your images stay completely private.

Color Mandalas and Line Art Digitally Online

In this screen recording, individual sections of a mandala are filled with color with just 1 click using our Paint Bucket tool so that each closed area between the black lines gets its own color instantly. This works with any line art, coloring pages, illustrations, vectors, photographs, or drawings.

Set Tolerance to a higher value like 60–70% to make sure that the color fills completely next to the black lines and no white area stays visible between the colors and black lines. Experiment with Tolerance slider to see which % works best for you. If a Tolerance is too high, the color might spread over the black outlines into the surrounding areas, no worries - click Undo, reduce Tolerance, and fill the color again.

More Ideas for Coloring with the Paint Bucket Tool

  • Color mandalas and zentangles - fill intricate patterns section by section for a meditative and creative experience. Much faster than coloring with hand and traditional mediums.
  • Color children's coloring pages - digitally color any printable coloring page before printing or sharing.
  • Color your own sketches - scan or photograph your hand-drawn line art and fill it with color digitally.
  • Recolor existing illustrations - change the color scheme of any flat graphic or illustration instantly.
  • Create stickers and digital art - color line art and combine it with our Background Remover to create transparent stickers ready for overlays and design projects. Use our Overlay Images Online Free Tool to place one image over another and save it in its original resolution and quality.
  • Color architectural drawings or maps - fill zones, house walls, rooms, or furniture with different colors for planning and presentation.

Make a Toned Paper for Your Sketch

After turning your reference photograph into a pencil sketch in our Photo to Sketch Converter Online Free, upload the sketch here to our Paint Bucket Tool to create various colors for the background.

In this screen recording, you can see how the photo of grapes was easily turned into pencil lines and the background was filled using the bucket tool. The Tolerance slider was set to the maximum (100%), which means the color will spread more aggressively and fill everything that is the same color. In the previous example with the mandala, 100% Tolerance was too high because we wanted to fill small, specific areas, so the tool should be forced to spread less.

This way, you can create your own toned paper, such as Strathmore Toned Tan or Gray, or Pastelmat, and apply any background color you wish. Then you can print it on a paper and color over it using your favorite medium, or work over it digitally.

You can experiment with this tool and learn how Tolerance slider behaves. Use the Undo button and try again as much as you want - there is no limit on how many images you can upload or download. We also let you download your pictures at the exact same size as your original image, unreduced.
